Does your child love to draw, and you're wondering whether it's already time for something more than just playing with crayons?

In this article — I'll share my own experience and offer some suggestions on when it's worth enrolling a child in formal drawing lessons.

🎨 My story — from play to art school

When I was 12, I started going to classes at a local art studio. But there was no typical "drawing instruction" there — more like playing with art. One time we'd paint batik, another time we'd sew a felt little horse. And sometimes... we'd simply jump straight into drawing the head of David. No introductions, no explaining the rules of composition or construction. And you know what? I think that was exactly right for that moment.

Over time I heard about an art school (a specialized middle school) and decided to try to get in. I had to pass exams: drawing from life (a still life), watercolour painting, and gouache composition. I started preparing intensively with a teacher, three times a week. But after a few weeks... I'd had enough. Apples, jugs, draped fabric — it all looked the same.

I told my mom I didn't think I wanted to go to that school anymore. But she said something wise: "Sit the exams anyway, since you've already been preparing. Then you can decide — whether you want to continue or not."

I passed. And I didn't have a single doubt, even for a moment, that I wanted to be there.

📌 My advice: when should you start formal drawing lessons for children?

🧒 Up to about age 11–12, children should explore art freely.

Without stress, without rules, without corrections. Just drawing, painting, gluing, creating — and taking joy from it.

Only later — if the child themselves wants to develop further — can you start drawing lessons involving construction, perspective, light and shadow, and proportion.

🔍 Do early playful activities get in the way? Absolutely not!

Children who spend a long time "playing" with art have more creative courage. Technical skills can be learned at the right time. What matters is not discouraging them too early.

At what age should you enrol a child in formal drawing lessons?

Ideally around age 10–12, if the child wants it themselves.

Earlier on — it's better to focus on creativity and spontaneity.

Forcing rules too early = risk of losing the joy of creating.
